The Union of Students (USI) in Ireland estimate 5,000 students joined their national demonstration today to warn the government of the impact of income-contingent loans on students and young people.
The march headed towards the Department of the Taoiseach for a performance by the Rubberbandits and a call on the Government and the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills to choose the publicly-funded third level education model as outlined in the Cassells Report.

Damage to two GoCars in Blackpitts, Dublin 8 from suspected arson attacks last night
The GOCar car sharing service was last night hit by two separate incidents of suspected arson on their vehicles.
GoCar Head Of Operations Jonathan Roche responding to the attacks in Dublin 8, said:
“As a small Irish business, an attack on two vehicles worth €15,000 each is obviously a huge disappointment for us, but it is an isolated incident and we’re reassured by how swiftly and thoroughly the Gardai have been dealing with it.
This is an ongoing investigation so we cannot currently comment any further on details of the suspected arson.
These 2 cars are consistently very busy, and with them off the road our members are inconvenienced and we’re losing out on essential revenue.
Our cars are like our shop for any small Irish store, and this attack will cause many knock-on effects for our business with a small team.
We’re confident the benefits of GoCar are being felt by both members and non-members, as each GoCar takes up to 14 private cars off the streets of Dublin and Cork”

Photographer Donal Moloney and writer Patricia Murphy visited the race track for an afternoon of pony trotting, harness racing and fascinating people and horse watching.
Patricia writes:
It’s a sunny Sunday in October as we pull into Portmarnock raceway. The retro burger wagon gleams in the sunlight as Chariots Of Fire plays out over the tannoy. Men clad in race colours akin to motorcycle super heroes saunter through the paddocks with mud splashed faces and cheeky grins. A slice of laid back Americana.
It’s not long before we are introduced to John ‘JR’ Richardson and Alan the ‘Wild Thing’ Wallace, seasoned veterans of the Irish Harness Racing (IHRA) circuit.
The bikes or sulkies lie to one side as owners, trainers and drivers prepare their prize pacers and trotters for the day’s races.
Out on the all weather track there is plenty of activity. Horses and drivers are warming up, the tractor loops around raking and sprinkling the surface between races before the moving gate lines up the competitors and they’re off to a running start.
Everything and everyone is in slow perpetual motion until a race starts and then it’s three minutes of focused attention, cheering and shouting.
Technically, we learn, there are a few differences between the races: Trotters follow a diagonal gait while the Pacers have perfected a lateral stride.Continue reading →
