Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China

Via NDTV:

China banned reality talent programmes Thursday and ordered broadcasters to promote more masculine representations of men, in a wide-ranging crackdown on “immoral” pop culture Beijing believes is leading young people astray.

“Broadcast and TV institutions must not screen idol development programmes or variety shows and reality shows,” China’s broadcast regulator, the National Radio and Television Administration said, in a raft of new regulations.

The regulator ordered broadcasters to resist “abnormal aesthetics” such as “sissy” men, “vulgar influencers“, stars’ inflated pay and performers with “lapsed morals“

Fianna Fáil TD for Offaly and Foreign Affairs committee member Barry Cowen has said the Taoiseach needs to address the issue regarding the “content” of the texts shared yesterday by Leo Varadkar over a UN role for former minister Katherine Zappone.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, he said that while he accepts Micheál Martin has said that no texts should be deleted if it contains Government business, he believes he needs to “acknowledge” the content of those texts.

He said he did not allude to the “startling information” within the texts, “the amount of knowledge that was known by the parties involved” and that a contract and agreement had been reached with Ms Zappone while no one else was aware of it.

Four In The Morning – Keep It Together

In the wee small hours…

Led by Kevin Dolan, this new four-piece have created a brooding and intense ballad for the sleep-deprived as the lead single from their new EP Stress Dreams.

Kevin writes:

“I didn’t really notice until the record was finished how many references to sleep and dreams there were across it. The songs are obsessed with family, longing, stress, depression, love, and how we make sense of all of it. They’re fragments, feelings, and a means of coping.”

Kevin is joined by fellow musicians Kiran Srinivasan, Dan Walwyn and Alex Lees and they honed their songwriting craft over the first lockdown.

Nick says: Insomniacs on the loose.

Behold: the Elephant’s Trunk Nebula winding said pareidoliac proboscis through the young star cluster complex IC 1396 in the constellation of Cepheus. To wit:

Also known as vdB 142, seen on the left the cosmic elephant’s trunk is over 20 light-years long. Removed by digital processing, no visible stars are in this detailed telescopic close-up view highlighting the bright swept-back ridges that outline pockets of cool interstellar dust and gas. But the dark, tendril-shaped clouds contain the raw material for star formation and hide protostars within. Nearly 3,000 light-years distant, the relatively faint IC 1396 complex covers a large region on the sky, spanning over 5 degrees. This starless rendition spans a 1 degree wide field of view though, about the angular size of 2 full moons. Of course the dark shapes below and right, marching toward the winding Elephant’s Trunk, are known to some as The Caravan.

Is our western coast now vulnerable to invasion?

Only time will tell.
