Charlie Bird

This morning.

RTÉ Radio One’s Today with Sarah McInerney.

Former RTÉ journalist Charlie Bird – responding to reinforced restrictions on the elderly – said he wears a mask and downloaded the Covid Tracker App…

“…even though a couple of days after I took it, it practically ran my mobile phone down where it nearly burned.

But I’m doing everything they’ve asked me to do…I’m sensible. I’ve got five grandkids, I don’t want anything to happen,

I don’t want anything to happen to my neighbours or to anybody else but that does not mean I should stay inside. I live in a part of Wicklow where I can walk out and see nobody for hours…”

It’s all very well to say we’re going to throw away the key on 70-year-olds again and I hate the word, absolutely hate the word ‘cocooning’...my former colleagues in the media are giving the Government an easy ride on this.”

Mr Bird repeatedly called for people to listen to Professor Jack Lambert’s interview on last night’s Drivetime on RTÉ Radio One.

This morning.

The National Public Health Emergency Team’s (Nphet) will today reccommend a number of measures to ‘curb a resurgence’ of Covid-19.

Via Independent.ie:

Older people will be asked to restrict their movements and avoid congregated settings under new advice from public-health experts.

Nphet has also recommended that only six people should be permitted in a home from three separate houses in a bid to clamp down on house parties and outdoor home gathering should be reduced to 15 people.

People who can work from home will also be asked to do so for the coming weeks. The Cabinet will meet to discuss the recommendations today.

Meanwhile…

‘A Cabinet source said there were concerns at the highest ranks of Cabinet that Nphet had “departed from the European mainstream in the severity of their advice” as they are “under pressure from academic commentators as opposed to solid science“.’

A Dublin school principal is considering whether to allow students to use their lockers

This morning.

Further to ‘breathing breaks‘…

….RTÉ’s Today with Sarah McInerney:

Principal of Coláiste Bríde in Clondalkin in Dublin Marie-Thérèse Kilmartin said physical distancing, movement breaks for pupils and staff and well-ventilated classrooms are “vital”.

She said her school is considering whether to allow students to use their lockers, because if they are in use students will each be responsible for wiping down the “high-touch” surfaces.

Ms Kilmartin said the school plans to spend time re-educating students on the symptoms of Covid-19, the use of face coverings, and good hand hygiene and coughing and sneezing etiquette.

She urged parents to support teachers in ensuring children and young people “come back to becoming aware of their physical distance with others“.

Principal of Scoil Naomh Bríd in Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, Terence Reynolds explained that his school will implement staggered lunch breaks for students and staff, “where half will be on the yard and half of the staff will be in the staff room,” he said.

Good times.

Berlin D2, Dame Lane, Dublin 2.

Berlin D2’s Jay Bourke said having reviewed the CCTV from the venue he believed the footage did not fully reflect what happened.

Mr Bourke said footage from inside the premises showed that for the majority of the time people were complying with public health guidelines.

He said 51 people had attended a brunch event, which was fully ticketed.

He said Berlin D2 was operating at less than 20% capacity at the time, was “spotlessly clean” and that food was served, temperature checks and details for contact tracing were taken on arrival and social distancing was maintained.

However he said Berlin D2 would stay closed until an internal investigation into the incident is completed.

Professor Pete Lunn of the Behavioural Research Unit of the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI)

This morning

RTÉ’s Today with Sarah McInerney.

Via RTÉ:

Pete Lunn, Head of the ESRI’s Behavioural Research Unit, said in a recent survey just over 70% of respondents said that people who tested positive for the virus had been “reckless or careless“.

He also said that a substantial minority of respondents said that people who test positive have themselves to blame.

Mr Lunn said the research was carried out after the behavioural change subgroup of NPHET, of which he is a member, had heard anecdotally from GPs that there was a reluctance among some people, particularly younger people, to get tested.

He said people were reportedly worried that others would blame them or suggest that their behaviour had not been “up to scratch“.

Sole traders like taxi drivers will be eligible for the grants worth ‘up to’ €1,000′

This morning.

Via RTÉ:

The grant, worth up to €1,000 per person, is aimed at sole traders such as plumbers, electricians, carpenters, taxi drivers, who do not pay commercial rates and therefore do not qualify for the Government’s Restart Grant Plus Scheme.

The Enterprise Support Grant previously supported entrepreneurs who were setting up new enterprises.

It has now been revamped to specifically provide once-off supports for self-employed people who have been severely affected and have had to cease operations as a result of the pandemic.

Some Dublin schools are considering offering ‘breathing breaks’ to allow students go outside and take off their masks for a time.

This afternoon.

Via Today FM:

We visited three schools in Dublin this week to find out how preparations are going for the coming year.

Around 930,000 students are returning to school for the first time since March and, when they do, they will face a very different learning experience.

Kathy Jones, Principal of the Bremore Educate Together school in Balbriggan said students and teachers will have to do all they can to keep each other safe.

“We will have to build in movement breaks and breathing breaks for the students where they can go outside, maybe remove the mask for a little while and go back in,” she said.

Meanwhile, Michael McHugh from O’Connell Secondary School in Drumcondra said

“Teachers by their nature are innovative people and they will come up with strategies and ways of keeping children apart but again, children by their nature want to play and interact with each other.

“We will be staggering breaks and we will have bubbles and pods in classrooms to keep them apart as much as possible.”

If you tolerate this, etc.
