Northern Ireland’s Dept of Social Development (prop. Nelson McCausland DUP) have painted over one of Belfast’s few bits of decent, non-sectarian graffitti/ mural. It was a line from Teenage Kicks which was painted on a bridge at Bridge End on the fringe of east Belfast. It was painted as a tribute to the late John Peel.

About half a mile away at the bottom of the Ravenhill Road there is a UVF mural featuring a masked man with an assault rifle. This will, of course, remain untouched.

There is always a tiny minority of individuals who behave inappropriately. When someone on the pro-life side does so, we must not hesitate to name it and make it clear that such behaviour is wrong and counterproductive. But we cannot allow it to distract from the main issues in the debate.

There will be plenty of time after this phase of the campaign to expose the lies and misrepresentation that has gone on.

And let’s encourage everyone we know to stay positive and do the cause proud.

Thank you for your prayers and continued support.

A woman who allegedly fell on a wet floor while dancing at a Dublin nightclub with a work colleague has sued for damages. Ciara O’Connell was allegedly dancing backwards to a song by Shakira in a style from the film ‘Dirty Dancing’ when the accident happened at Copper Face Jacks, Harcourt Street, the High Court heard.

When counsel for the club put it to Ms O’Connell that she had been dancing in a ‘Dirty Dancing’ manner, and that Mr Humphries had leaned back too far and fell over, Ms O’Connell said it felt like he had slipped. “I could not say why he fell,” she said. Nobody suggested to her she was dancing in a reckless manner, she said.

Hips.

They never lie.

NIXONSCAMPAIGNnixonmonumentEveryone old enough can remember where they were in October 1970.

President Nixon’s visit to reconnect with his Irish roots was a story that touched the hearts of every Irish person both here and ‘abroad’.

The first Irish Quaker President, to set foot on Irish soil.

Nixon had Irish connections on both the maternal and paternal side of the family. His Kildare connections came from his Mother, Hannah Milhouse. Her ancestor Thomas Milhouse of Timahoe emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1729.The Milhouses were members of a Quaker community that were prominent in the Timahoe area throughout the early 18th century.

This  October, Broadsheet will commemorate the visit with a month-long range of activities and poorly researched articles on Nixon, what he means to the Irish and what his legacy can teach our political leaders.

Very little, as it turns out, but you won’t want to miss it.
