A vigil for Savita Halappanavar will take place in Eyre Square today, on the second anniversary of the 31-year-old dentist’s death at University Hospital Galway. The memorial will take place in front of the Browne Doorway, where photographs of Savita will be on display. From noon, members of the public are invited to leave their thoughts on Savita in the form of written messages. Galway Pro-Choice will collect these messages and present them to Savita’s family and friends. The public are also free to leave flowers at the site. At 6pm, there will be a candlelit vigil, to which everybody who wishes to commemorate Savita is welcome.

A number of pro choice activists will travel from Connolly Station in Dublin today to Belfast, in order to bring abortion pills back to Dublin with them. Abortion pills are banned in Ireland.
They will arrive back at Connolly Station at 2.30pm.
The action recalls how members of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement took the Contraception Train, from Dublin to Belfast, in 1971 to bring back condoms and the Pill, which were illegal in the Republic of Ireland at the time.

Save Kilkenny protestors this summer were used as practice by Gardai for Water Charge Protests. A complete over reaction whereby twice daily at 9 and 3 o’clock sometimes as many as 50 police helped escort materials to build an unwanted bridge in Kilkenny. Sometimes as little as only a dozen or so protestors were present to face down this onslaught- most of them women – many elderly. The local authority were present when gardai removed protestors from the site in September. Fund raising still continues to help Legal Actions at the moment in the High Court.

A proposal by ‘computational and speculative designer’ Benedikt Groβ and San Francisco based geographer Joey Lee to ‘run a satellite image based alphabet searching algorithm’ to identify man made structures that look like letters of the alphabet when viewed from above. They say:

My friend in work’s cat has gone missing around the Ringsend area, near Fisherman’s Wharf. His name is Chico, he is a 4 year old male, neutered and microchipped – this is really unlike him and it is a bad week for cats to be missing with bonfires etc… He answers to his name unusually for a cat.. if people could keep an eye out for him that would be great. He belongs to Fionnuala…it would be great if you could post this Broadsheet as she is really worried.

[The UNICEF report] found Irish families with children have lost the equivalent of ten years of income progress. The child poverty rate rose by over 10% to 28.6% between 2008 and 2012.This corresponds to a net increase of more than 130,000 poor children in Ireland.
