What you may need to know:

1. Philip is a self-absorbed writer awaiting the release of his second novel which he is convinced will be a hit. Bored with both his daily routine and his girlfriend, a meeting with his literary idol offers him a chance to escape the city for a while. Much comedic navel-gazing ensues.

2. The film has been doing the film festival rounds since Sundance in January. It’s going to the London Film Festival on October 9 before going on limited release in the US after securing a distributor back in June.

3. This is director Alex Ross Perry’s third feature and it focuses on middle aged regret, among other themes. Perry has just turned 30. Mmmmf.

4. Perry’s meandering film narrative, where the character focus changes for large periods of time, was inspired by William Gaddis’ novel The Recognitions.

5. Perry’s previous film The Colour Wheel (2011) was theindiewire.com’s best undistributed film of 2011. Being undistributed is the new beard.

6. Jason Schwartzman was previously the drummer with the band Phantom Planet. Phantom Planet was responsible for some horrendous dancing on an episode of Sabrina The Teenage Witch as well as the the ear assault that is ‘California’, the theme tune to teen-drama ‘The O.C.‘

7. Broadsheet Prognosis: Rushmore is middle aged.

It’s always the last resort.

Steve writes:

“I was clamped for being parked “in 3 spaces” in the apartment block where I live. Maybe I am biased so I was looking for your readers opinions. I am basically on the white lines, but my spot is against the wall so I have to come out a bit to fit. And as long as I have lived there all 5 spots around me have been empty. I think it just highlights the issues of private bullshit clamping. To be fair they are going to deal with it quickly…. ‘We will endeavour to respond to you within 28 working days once a full review of your case has been completed, and a decision has been made’.”

“Looks like Tesco on Thomas St is going to donate €500 to UCKG, the money laundering, tax evading neo-Pentecostal sect (there’s another word for it…) implicated in Victoria Climbié’s death in London. There’s a good cause…”

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald at the citizenship ceremony in the Convention Centre in Dublin on Monday

Further to RTÉ reporter Brian O’Connell’s recent interviews with female asylum seekers who say they have turned to prostitution, to supplement the weekly €19.10 they receive from the State, Ms Fitzgerald told the Dáil yesterday:

“I do not accept it is inevitable that women in direct provision must resort to prostitution. I have asked for reports from the Garda on any harassment that might be taking place. If there is information available to show that women are being solicited or put under pressure, that must be examined and managers in local centres must be highly sensitive to it. Certainly, I do not see it as inevitable.”

And, in relation to the recent protests held by asylum seekers at different accommodation centres across the country, she said:

“Protests are taking place throughout the country at present. I appeal to people not to take part in such protests. I am of the view that the way forward is by means of legislation and through the efforts of the working group we are establishing to deal with the issues.”
…
“I hope NGOs are not organising protests outside direct provision centres. I would be very concerned with regard to the impact of this on both the children and families of the protesters…It is one thing to draw attention to the problem. I again call on people not to protest in a way that makes it impossible to run the centres, to have them cleaned and to have food delivered to them. I am concerned with regard to what is happening. Changes can be made without the need for such protest action.”

Phil Hogan

You may recall how Independent MEP Nessa Childers wrote to all the members of the Social Democrats group – 191 members – of the European Parliament, in which she said she had “serious reservations” about Mr Hogan getting the EU Commissioner post.

Ms Childers specifically wrote about how Mr Hogan, as Environment Minister, had written to some of his constituents in Kilkenny, telling them a Traveller family – Patrick and Brigid Carthy and their seven children – would not be moved to a house near them.

During an interview on September 10, Mr Hogan told RTÉ Ms Childers assertions were ‘absolute rubbish’ and suggested they may be dealt with in the courts.

Mr Hogan is set to go before the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture to be questioned about his suitability to become the next Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Further to this, RTÉ reports:

“Mr Hogan’s solicitors have threatened legal action against Ms Childers if she did not withdraw her allegations within five days, and challenging her claim that as an MEP she enjoyed parliamentary privilege.”
…
“Last night in a letter, seen by RTÉ News, Ms Childers wrote to the Committee on Legal Affairs of the European parliament requesting that the chairman reassure MEPs that they can, quote, discharge their duties of scrutiny without hindrance or fear of legal retaliation.”
