This afternoon.

Via RTÉ:

NPHET is meeting today and is expected to make recommendations, which would be considered by the new Covid-19 oversight group this afternoon.

The special Cabinet Covid-19 Sub-Committee is then scheduled to meet tomorrow.

Arising from its discussions it is likely that the Cabinet would then make a final decision later tomorrow evening.

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has sad that if NPHET advises further Covid-19 restrictions for Dublin, the Government will respond accordingly.

Any additional Dublin measures would be in place by weekend (RTÉ)

Gary T writes:

If NPHET advises further restrictions the government ‘will respond accordingly’.

Therefore, why the hell do you have go through two oversight committees and a full cabinet before relaying that advice to the public?

Now then.

What have we here?

At risk Dublin resident Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina enjoys lunch among friends in Galway seemingly disobeying the plea from Taoiseach Michaél Martin for people to stay in the capital.

So, when did he leave Dublin?

Dr Martin Feeley’s position with the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group was ‘untenable’ after criticising Ireland’s ‘Draconian’ response to the rona

This afternoon.

Further to his stinging criticism of Covid-19 policy …

…and following the launch of an investigation by the Medical Council into Dr Marcus De Brun…

Via The Irish Times:

Dr Martin Feeley’s views that coronavirus is “much less severe” than the flu for most people and that restrictions were no longer justified caused a furore after they were reported in The Irish Times last weekend.

The HSE actively dissociated itself from his remarks and rejected his suggestion that young people should be allowed to get the virus to develop herd immunity.

Dr Feeley (70) stepped down from his post as clinical director of Dublin Midlands Hospital Group on Tuesday with immediate effect.

After his public comments, he came under heavy pressure from HSE management, who told him his position was untenable.

A doctor for more than 45 years and an employee of the health service for 30 years, Dr Feeley says he stands by his comments, but decided to resign so management in his hospital group would not be penalised.

Let Dr Feeley and De Brun be a lesson to all you other mouthy medics.

Muzzle it.

Good times.

This afternoon.

The Acting Chief Medical Officer has said “it’s unfortunate that the plan was published at a time at which the trajectory of the virus is changing in this country”.

Also speaking at the Global Ireland 2020 Summit, Dr Ronan Glynn, said they’ve “tried to be more nuanced and we try to be as proportionate as possible in the measures” but as part of that “it does lead to confusion”.

He said he believes the messaging is very clear: “We don’t want you to mix with any more than one other household, quite simply, now is not the time for wet bars to open in Dublin and equally if possible, and this is the nuance, this is the proportionality, we’re asking people if possible to avoid travel outside of Dublin for the coming couple of weeks”.

In fairness.

Meanwhile…

‘…The most significant criticism of the current Government is that it has given conflicting and sometimes contradictory health guidance. The public are frustrated both by the pandemic itself and the mixed messages they receive from those in authority.

This is hardly a surprise given the attendance at the Clifden golf dinner. A Cabinet Minister who sat in on discussions about new guidelines clearly did not understand their reach. A European commissioner believed he was within the guidance and a Supreme Court judge was not very clear about their contents at a practical or personal level.

If these eminent people were confused, it is easy to understand how the ordinary citizen might also be confused. If the new oversight group achieves more clarity around messaging and what is practical then it will have achieved a lot.

But it remains hard to believe, having served in government, that an extra layer will render things more transparent.’
