A light project entitled Lucid Stead by artist Phillip K Smith III unveiled last month in the high desert at Joshua Tree in Califormia.

Composed of mirror, LED lighting, custom built electronic equipment and Arduino programming amalgamated with a preexisting structure, this architectural intervention, at first, seems alien in context to the bleak landscape. Upon further viewing, Lucid Stead imposes a delirious, almost spiritual experience. Like the enveloping vista that changes hue as time passes, Lucid Stead transforms. In daylight the 70 year old homesteader shack, that serves as the armature of the piece, reflects and refracts the surrounding terrain like a mirage or an hallucination.

Designed by artists Joe O’Connell and Blessing Hancock, the chandeliers are currently installed, and lit by night, beneath an overpass in San Antonio, Texas. The artists say:

The medallions are a play on the iconography of La Loteria, which has become a touchstone of Hispanic culture. Utilizing traditional tropes like La Escalera (the Ladder), La Rosa (the Rose), and La Sandía (the Watermelon), the piece alludes to the neighborhood’s farming roots and horticultural achievements. Each character playfully rides a bike acting as a metaphor for the neighborhood’s environmental progress, its concurrent eco-restoration projects, and its developing cycling culture.

A hypnotic clip (actually a teaser for an upcoming video for ‘Sparkles and Wine’ by French electronica group OPALE) in which director Nacho Guzman shows how lighting and the angle of illumination can radically affect how a face appears, in this case the face of actress Stella Stocker.

Guzman acknowleges the influence of French director Henri-Georges Clouzot’s unfinished 1964 film L’Enfer.

The skulls are made from carefully vacuum-sealed borosilicate glass tubes within which the ionised gases fluoresce when electrified.

Designed and sold by Polish designer Pani Jurek, these suspended single and double-tiers of test tubes (apparently inspired by Polish scientist Marie Curie) can be customised with coloured water or flowers.

Or radioactive isotopes.

Designed by Kim Sung Min and the winner of a 2013 Red dot ‘best of the best’ design award, this electric pin-up board concept is called ‘It’s Time To Read Me’:

The idea is to make sure the right memos catch your attention. The drawing pin draws power from the board when it is pressed in. A spring-operated time-setting dial activates the light according to the user’s settings. It also controls the flow of power. When the user sets a time, the electricity to that pin is cut off. When the set time arrives and the dial moves back into its original position, the electricity can flow again and the pin lights up.
