To celebrate a fresh delivery of signed A3 giclée prints from Claudine O’Sullivan, we’d like to give one away to a Broadsheet reader who tells us an obscure fact about an animal of their choosing. Most fascinating wins.

Via Irish Times:

Several high-ranking sources said that the Nphet advice had been sprung on the Government, with no indications at a meeting on Tuesday between the Coalition leaders and senior Nphet officials that such a draconian stance would be taken.

Senior sources said that the proposed 5pm closing time could be extended until 9 or 10pm, but stressed that this would depend on the discussions between the party leaders this morning and the decision of the Cabinet when it meets later in the afternoon.

Several people involved in discussions on the issue in Government said that the Nphet proposals amounted to an effective lockdown of the hospitality industry. “This is a lockdown by stealth,” one said.

Responding to Nphet’s recommendation of a 5pm curfew…

Restaurants Association of Ireland Chief Executive Adrian Cummins said there needs to be immediate engagement with Government because the industry is in a “very precarious position” with Christmas a number of days away.

It is effectively “a hospitality lockdown” if the recommendation from NPHET is taken on board by Government, he said.

Mr Cummins also said this latest proposal brings into question the Covid digital pass and all the other different measures hospitality has brought in to ensure they keep their businesses open.

Vintners’ Association of Ireland Chairperson Michael O’Donovan said it would have a major impact and said the industry has been fighting very hard all summer and autumn to get their teams back up and running.

This would be a real hammer blow because it would be closure for many.”

Green Party junior minister Malcolm Noonan writes:

The conservation of historic shopfronts is a cause close to my heart and I am delighted that a dedicated stream for Irish-language shopfronts will run again under the Historic Structures Fund in 2022.

It is my hope that the scheme will encourage and incentivise projects which preserve both our built and linguistic heritage, not only in Gaeltacht regions but across the whole country.

Structures must be included, or eligible for inclusion, in the Record of Protected Structures; Grants of between €15,000 and €50,000 available; The fund increases visibility of the Irish language on streetscapes.

Can you help?

This afternoon.

A petition has been launched by the Tuam Mother and Baby Home Alliance calling for the immediate exhumation of the Tuam burial site and a full investigation into the deaths of the children.

They write:

In 2020, the Irish Government introduced a ‘Burials Bill’ to facilitate the Exhumation of the Tuam and other similar sites across Ireland. The Bill has been severely criticised by Campaigners for its shortcomings such as, failing to utilise existing legislation to achieve the same goals.

One area of deep concern relates to the dis-application of the role of the Coroner and thereby the prospect of a full investigation into the deaths of the Children.

In the absence of any urgency from the Irish Government, the Families of the Lost Children, and surviving Family Members, who have yet to receive confirmation that a family member is interred within these grounds, anxiously wait to hear when they will be reunited with their kin.

Requests include:

That the Irish Government rethinks its proposed Burials Bill and listen to the voices of the families of the disappeared Children and Mothers;

That the Irish Government presents an immediate and clear timetable when the Exhumations for the Tuam Mother and Baby Home site will commence;

That timetable should also set out when Exhumations will begin at other sites

That all bodies so found are fully accounted for and where possible, their causes of death are established;

That the bodies found have their DNA extracted and that the Irish Government creates an International Public Information Campaign to find and identify surviving relatives;

That the full outcome of the Exhumations are set out in a Public record, including the methodology and actions taken by the Coroner and the An Garda Síochána, to hold those either individually or corporately responsible to account.
