‘Rebecca’s Boyfriend’

The debut feature from filmmaker Craig Austin Reynolds will have its premiere at the IndieCork film festival on September 19 at the Gate Cinema, Cork.

You might recall Craig’s excellent short ‘Ringsend‘ a few years back.

Craig writes:

Rebecca’s Boyfriend is an Irish, no budget indie film made over the course of two years with a lot of heart. It’s got a brilliant Irish cast including Cameron Macaulay, Jack Gleeson (Game of Thrones, Batman Begins), Mark Doherty (Moone Boy, Ondine, Disco Pigs), and a whole host of other brilliant established and up-and-coming theatre actors.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney departs the grounds of Leinster House following the defeat of a Sinn Féin vote of no confidence over his botched handling of Katherine Zappone’s UN appointment.

Meanwhile…

An allegation made in the Dáil yesterday by Sinn Féin politician Matt Carthy about Minister Simon Harris was “appalling” and “an abuse of Dáil privilege”, a Fine Gael TD has said.

Speaking under privilege during a Dáil debate yesterday, Mr Carthy accused Minister Harris of leaking from Cabinet.

A spokesperson for Minister Harris said the accusation amounts to “a clear misuse of Dáil privilege and it’s untrue”.

Around Midnight last night at the Bemused family kitchen

Further to yesterday’s Slightly Bemused column concerning Little Slightly and Irish culinary matters.

Slightle Bemused writes:

We set Little Slightly loose on the Kildare shopping scene with her cousin Glitter Slightly. Shoes were bought, foundation secured, and sunscreen for their upcoming trip to Spain – all organised without request for permission and certainly without remorse.

She arrived home, having again decided my drive is too narrow, and bags were taken from the car. Being the caring father, I offered to help. I was given the bag for the fridge. In which 2 packs of a pound each of sausages was secreted, nearly at the bottom. Once my chuckling subsided, I put them in the fridge.

I was asked if I wanted some mash. I had not realised this was merely to be a side to the whole pack of sausages slowly cooking beside them. At least she eats them skins and all!

I came downstairs at nearly midnight, and she paused, fork halfway to lips, and asked if I wanted any sausages. There were six left. Now there are two. Who knows what the night will bring?

Should I mention that she bought the sausages having gone into Dunnes to get American-Style bacon as per Know Knots‘ recommendation in the comment on my column…Let this be a lesson: your words have consequences. In this case late night snacks :-)

Via France24:

Thousands of health workers across France have been suspended without pay for failing to get vaccinated against Covid-19 ahead of a deadline this week, Health Minister Olivier Veran said Thursday.

“Some 3,000 suspensions were notified yesterday to employees at health centres and clinics who have not yet been vaccinated,” Veran told RTL radio.

He added that “several dozens” had turned in their resignations rather than sign up for the jabs.

That compares with 2.7 million health workers overall, Veran said, adding that “continued healthcare is assured”.

President Emmanuel Macron gave staff at hospitals, retirement home workers and the fire service an ultimatum in July to get at least one shot by September 15 or face unpaid suspension.

Many nurses in particular have been reluctant to get vaccinated, citing safety or efficacy concerns, posing the risk that France’s inoculation drive could stall.

More than 30,000 women in the United Kingdom have reported that their periods were disrupted after getting a COVID-19 vaccine

Via Sky News:

Dr Victoria Male, a lecturer in reproductive immunology at Imperial College London, said most women return to normal after a single cycle and there was no evidence that vaccination affected fertility.

In an opinion piece in the British Medical Journal, she said the changes were not confined to a single type of vaccine, with reports among women who had received the Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines.

If there is a link between vaccines and period disruption, she said “it is likely to be a result of the immune response to vaccination rather than a specific vaccine component”.

She said research into this possible reaction is needed to understand why it might be happening.

Motion Control – Shutdown

Do you like your rock raw and in-yer-face?

Then you’ll love Dublin five-piece Motion Control who sound like the square root of The Clash and Rage Against The Machine.

Motion Control are: Vocals – Conor Hamilton (Actor/Bartender); Bass – Michael McCrimmon (Bike repair specialist/Metal enthusiast); Lead guitar – Brandon Larkin (Life insurance broker/child prodigy); Rhythm guitar – Ross McMullin (Local Spar cashier and music producer); and Keyboards – Conor Barnes (Ryan’s bartender and skin fade specialist aka barber).

Singer Conor writes:

“Like most live acts during the off-time, we all found it hard to find the motivation to put plans together but after 6 years it’s hard to let it all just fade into nothing. After the positive response to the release of our single ‘Sick Memories’, the band are set to release our latest single ‘Alice’ sometime before the new year.

“’Alice’ will be available across all platforms with a list of potential gigs to be announced in November/ December following the return of live music to venues.”

Nick says: I second that Motion.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison was called “that fellow Down Under” by President Joe Biden during an international call

Let’s face it, it doesn’t look great
When you’re working as a head of state
And then, to your shame
Forget someone’s name
And end up just calling them “mate”.
