You may recall a previous post in which Karen Harte and Jessica Maybury, of Girls like Comics, appealed for submissions for an anthology of stories, illustrations art on the themes of repealing the 8th amendment, reproductive rights and bodily autonomy in Ireland.

Well.

They have received the submissions and have now launched a Kickstarter campaign to cover the production costs of the book.

All additional proceeds from this and the sale of the book will go directly to the Abortion Rights Campaign (ARC).

This afternoon.

A Repeal The 8th banner on the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas in Galway.

Díobháil writes:

In the early morning hours of [today], feminist pro-choice activists Díobháil (Bíonn Díobháil a dhéanamh againn: We make mischief) struck again and dropped a banner from Galway Cathedral stating “Repeal the 8th – Free, Safe, Legal” demanding access to abortion.

For too long, the Church and the State have controlled our bodies and our choices. It is time to finally end the unholy alliance of Church and State.

While Díobháil respects peoples’ personal religious beliefs, these should not be imposed on others, and the vast majority of people in Ireland agree (Amnesty International’s Red C Poll found that ‘82% of people polled who describe themselves as religious believe their religious views should apply to them and not be imposed on other people).

Let us not forget, St. Brigid was our first abortionist, and this is why we demand “Take your rosaries off our ovaries!”.

We are not vessels, we are not incubators, we will not be silenced.

Thanks Díobháil

Hot Press reports:

This week, a mural on the wall of the Project Arts Centre in Temple Bar, with the slogan ‘Repeal the 8th’ has attracted some controversy.

The artwork, offending or otherwise, was commissioned by ‘Hunreal Issues’, a new website that aims to share women’s issues with a wider audience and painted by renowned urban artist Maser.

It is not the first mural to appear outside the Centre, but it is definitely the most controversial. Its predecessor was a big ‘YES’ mural to honour the marriage referendum, which curiously didn’t receive any complaints.

This highlights how incredibly divisive the issue of abortion can be – at least for some.

According to Project Arts Artistic Director Cian O’Brien, the centre has received 50 complaints, but it has also attracted over 200 messages of support.

Project Arts Centre this afternoon.

The Project Arts Centre has released the following statement:

We have taken the decision to remove the mural artwork by celebrated street artist, Maser, painted on the front of our building, after receiving a warning notice from Dublin City Council Planning Department that the work is in violation of the Planning & Development Acts (2000-2015).

Commenting on the artwork, Project Arts Centre Artistic Director, Cian O’Brien, said:

“We have had an astonishing response to this artwork by Maser and I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the conversation around this important topic. I, in no way, wish to censor or silence an artist; I respect the legal position that the DCC Planning Office is in and the parameters within which they are working. This artwork occurs in the context of many in the artistic programme.”

“It is the first time Project has been presented with a planning notice for a painted artwork on the front of our current building. Project Arts Centre is complying with the planning notice and has removed this artwork. We look forward to working through official channels with Maser and The HunReal Issues to explore the possibility of re-installing this work as soon as possible.”

Minister for Children Katherine Zappone launching the Rape Crisis Network of Ireland’s report on sexual violence against members of the LGBT community earlier today

Minister for Children Katherine Zappone spoke to Audrey Carville on RTÉ’s News At One today.

It followed Ms Zappone launching the Rape Crisis Network of Ireland’s report on the sexual violence in the LGBT community.

The report was carried out by the RCNI with Gay Switchboard Ireland and the Gay & Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN).

After discussing the findings of the report, Ms Carville raised the defeat of Independents 4 Change TD Mick Wallace’s bill…

During the interview, Ms Zappone said:

“…What I find is, in my work both going around the country and also in working with frontline agencies, such as the Rape Crisis Network represents, is that people want to talk to me about childcare, child homelessness, repealing the 8th – those are the issues that they’re concerned about and they’re looking to Government to do something about. Those are the issues on the minds and hearts of our people.”

I have been an advocate, as a feminist really, for the past 30 years to change the constitution with regard to abortion. I think we live in a country where there’s way too much restriction on the legislation for women to access, in times of certain circumstances what they require when they are pregnant.”

Having said that, I did study the bill, very carefully. Obviously, I listened to and accepted the advice of the Attorney General, I talked to other legal advisors, I talked to medical professionals and concluded that it actually wouldn’t bring about the desired effect of the authors of the bill.”

So I expect probably, if I had been in Opposition, I would have voted against it as well.”

“My primary objective is that we would get some constitutional change in relation to the 8th amendment. I think to call one [a referendum] now – I’m not convinced yet that enough people are with us, especially those who are still to be persuaded, part of middle Ireland, to say yes, they agree finally that there are various circumstances where women do, in very difficult circumstances, do the best and the most correct and ethical action to choose abortion or to terminate their pregnancy.”

“So I’m not convinced that our people are ready to pass that referendum and we need more time and I think the process of a Citizens’ Assembly is the best way to move in that direction.”
