Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris has suggested an extension of the digital Covid certificate beyond October 22nd as a possible way of society fully reopening in a safe way.

Mr Harris said under the current proposals, the use of digital certificates was no longer required after the ending of restrictions on venues, such as nightclubs, from the end of next week.

He said: “We are not in this binary position of do we open or not to open. We have learned a lot about the virus and learned a lot about how to keep us safe. We have a huge amount of our people vaccinated.

“We should be asking more nuanced questions of each other. How can you open and keep it safely open?”

Extension of digital Covid cert could allow further easing of restrictions, suggests Harris (Irish Times)

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly is self-isolating after experiencing mild symptoms of Covid-19.

He was forced to postpone his Budget press conference due at the Department of Health this morning where he was scheduled to appear before members of the media.

The Department of Health said today he “has experienced mild symptoms of Covid-19.

As per public health advice, Minister Donnelly immediately self-isolated and arranged a test which has returned a not-detected result.

“Minister Donnelly will continue to follow the public health advice (including working from home) and encourages anyone who experiences symptoms of Covid-19 to self-isolate and get tested straight away.”

Dublin City Council Chief Executive Owen Keegan

This afternoon.

Further to Dublin City Council chief executive Owen Keegan’s suggestion to UCD Students’ Union President Ruarí Power that his union become property developers to ease and profit from the housing crisis…

….a protest took place outside Mr Keegan’s office.

Via University Times:

UCDSU President Ruarí Power told the crowd:

“To prioritise the profit margins of private purpose-built student accommodation providers over the public good is a shameful act which will push young people into precarious living circumstances over the coming months”

Power told the crowd today: “We’re not here primarily about a few sarcastic remarks … the big problem here is the underlying attitude that students are an economic good. They’re there to be absolutely fleeced, left, right and centre.”

From top: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and then Taoiseach Leo Varadkar at Parliament Buildings at Stormont, Belfast, Northern Ireland on January 13, 2020; Texts last night from former Johnson aide Dominic Cummings

This afternoon.

Via ITV News:

Ireland has warned countries around the world not to trust the UK because it is run by a “British government that doesn’t necessarily keep its word”.

Irish deputy prime minister Leo Varadkar urged countries to be careful when dealing with the UK because of the “bad faith” demonstrated in the government’s plans to overhaul a key agreement signed as part of the Brexit deal.

After agreeing to the Northern Ireland Protocol – part of the Brexit arrangement that means checks on some goods and services flowing between Great Britain and NI – the UK has continually sought to change aspects of it.

The EU, and swathes of British MPs, have been unhappy about the UK’s attempts to renege on the agreement, but comments by Boris Johnson’s former top aide Dominic Cummings appear to have caused anger.

Australia’s Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner

Last night/this morning.

Via News.com.aus:

Essential workers in the Australian Northern Territory will be subject to one of the strictest Covid-19 vaccination mandates in the world to begin in just a month.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said employees who interacted with the public needed to get least one Covid-19 jab by November 13 or they wouldn’t be allowed back to work and faced a $5000 fine.

The new directions apply to:

Employees at all jobs that involve interacting with members of the public. For example: hospitality, banking, retail, supermarket, receptionists, hairdressers and beauty therapists

Workers who come into direct contact with people at risk of severe illness from Covid-19, like Aboriginal people or those who can’t be vaccinated

People who perform work in essential infrastructure, food or essential good security or supply, or logistics.

The direction also includes a provision that mandates booster shots for those workers in the future.

Employers will be allowed to request proof of vaccination of staff and will be required to keep a register of the vaccination status of all employees.
